From Here: Dina Vink

From Here is a collection of conversations with the people who know the Tutukaka Coast best — not just where to go, but when, and why. Locals who’ve grown up here, or made it home in their own way, sharing quiet rituals, favourite spots, and the small moments that shape life on this part of the coast. It’s less about big itineraries, more about noticing what’s worth slowing down for.

Today we are joined by Dina Vink, a real estate agent based in Tutukaka. Dina is deeply passionate about helping people find their place – whether that’s a forever home, a holiday escape, or their next great investment. Having lived most of her life on the Tutukaka Coast, she knows the area inside and out and genuinely loves sharing what makes it so special.

What’s a typical morning like on the coast for you?

My mornings on the coast usually kick off with the sunrise. I’ll head out for a walk or run along the shore in Ngunguru, then jump in the estuary for a swim or a cold plunge depending on the time of year. It’s the perfect way to wake up and clear your head.

Any hidden spots/places of note you’d recommend to visitors?

One bay that still feels like a bit of a secret is Daisy Bay. You’ve got to walk to get there, but it’s totally worth it. White sand, crystal water, and hardly anyone around.. even during peak summer! It’s a little slice of magic.

What local event really brings people together?

I can think of a few, both past and present, but one that really stands out from my childhood is Guy Fawkes night when I was at Ngunguru School. Every year they’d hold it on the little sandspit across from the school, and the whole community would come down for our own fireworks show. It felt like everyone was there, and as a kid, it was just the best night ever. These days, the Tutukaka Twilight Markets have a similar vibe. Good food, live music, and everyone coming together. It’s got that same sense of community.

What shouldn’t someone miss if they only have a day here?

One thing you’ve got to do is check out Matapouri Bay. It’s such an iconic spot and seriously beautiful. The walk from Matapouri to Whale Bay is also a really nice, scenic walk with stunning views. And if you can get out on the water with Dive! Tutukaka, heading to the Poor Knights Islands is unreal. The sea life out there is amaaaaazing! We’re so lucky to have a place like that in our part of the world!

What’s changed recently – and what do you hope never does?

I’ve really noticed the next generation moving to the coast. There are so many young families settling here now and really embracing the coastal lifestyle. What I hope never changes is the humbleness of the place, the strong community feel, and the respect people have for the land and the water.

Thank you, Dina, for giving us such a thoughtful glimpse into what makes Tutukaka so special.
